Julia Wakelam LLB MBA – Solicitor

Julia has over 30 years’ experience of working with the owners and senior management of small and medium sized businesses. Having set up her own practice in 1981, and managed its growth into a successful modern legal practice, Julia has an understanding of how business works and of the stresses and difficulties that face owners and managers. This practical knowledge, and her legal training, has been enhanced by studies leading to a Master’s degree in Business Administration.

“I believe that a business lawyer must be more than a legal problem solver, important as that is. My clients need me to understand the commercial climate in which they operate and what they are trying to achieve. Only then can we together find the right solution – appropriate, achievable, and affordable – for the presenting problem.”

Julia advises on the following areas of law:

  • Commercial property: sales, purchases, leases, developments
  • Business purchases and sales
  • Formation of companies and limited liability partnerships
  • Shareholder Agreements, Partnership Agreements, Members Agreements
  • Agency, Distribution and Joint Venture agreements
  • Terms and Conditions of Sale/Purchase
  • Manufacturing agreements and licences

Julia also has a career-long interest in Employment Law and is a member of the Employment Law Association. She advises on contractual documentation, employment policies and procedures, as well as on termination of employment and appears in the Employment Tribunal and Employment Appeal Tribunal. She works closely with Wendy Brown, Head of Employment Law at Bates Wells & Braithwaite.

In her private life, Julia is married with two teenage children. When not working for Bates Wells & Braithwaite, Julia is Chair of Gatehouse Caring in West Suffolk, a trustee of Bury Ecumenical Trust and a school governor. She loves books, theatre, gardening, walking, food and wine and playing (bad) bridge.
